The events that occured over a few weeks in Baltimore were a major inspiration for this project. The chosen persona involves both the police force and those that find themselves on the other side of the shield.
After brainstorming a variety of consumer needs and researching wearable technologies, I chose to focus on the redesign of a riot shield. This was initially because of the Riots that had occurred in Ferguson, MI. But later my choice was affirmed by the recent events in Baltimore.
Jeremy worked at the central jail in Orange County, and is still with the sheri ’s department. He provided a lot of useful information about mob control and riot shield use in prisons.
More specifically, I focused on the untapped capabilities of a riot shield and the technologies that can be used to create a meaningful tool for relaying information as well as directing large crowds.
The final design attaches new meaning to riot shield by rethinking the purpose and the technologies that can be used to create a meaningful tool for relaying information as well as directing large crowds.
The riot shield also features an ergonomic design to accommodate the variety of uses it may see itself in.
